Understanding how your septic system works
Knowledge is crucial, and the more you understand your septic system, the better you can catch issues early and keep your system healthy. Our certified technicians will take the time to explain how your septic system functions, suggest maintenance, and highlight any potential problems.
A septic system generally follows these steps:
- The septic tank gathers all household wastewater, including from toilets, baths, kitchen, and laundry.
- The tank holds the wastewater, allowing solids to settle at the bottom (sludge), and oils and grease to float to the top (scum).
- Partially treated/separated wastewater goes to a drainage area (field, mound, etc.).
- As wastewater passes through the soil, microorganisms remove any remaining pollutants, and the filtered water is recycled.
All septic systems will eventually have issues. However, a well-designed system tailored to your property can make a significant difference between one that functions well for many years and one that causes problems prematurely.
